چکیده

In this paper the trade-off between time diversity and the inter-carrier interference (ICI) in an OFDM based MC-CDMA system is discussed. Our approach is to partially shift each spectrum of an OFDM symbol at the transmitter by using different phase shifts in the time domain at different antennas after the OFDM modulation. The summary signal at the receiver has a wider Doppler spectrum as the result of different uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. This leads to an artificially increased selective time channel transfer function, which is more favorable for the channel decoder at the receiver. The trade-off between Doppler diversity and ICI is found at about 9% maximum Doppler spread of the subcarrier distance for flat fading channels and frequency selective fading channel models. The distance to the independent Rayleigh channel bound by applying an MMSE detector is less than 2 dB for convolutional coding and about 2 dB for turbo coding at a BER of 10−3 for flat fading channels. For frequency selective fading channels this approaches to less than 1 dB to the independent Rayleigh channel bound.

Radio environment map-based cognitive Doppler spread compensation algorithms for high-speed rail broadband mobile communications

Recently, there is an increasing yet challenging demand on broadband mobile communications for high-speed trains. In this article, cognitive Doppler spread compensation algorithms are proposed for high-speed rail broadband mobile communications, which make use of the dedicated radio environment map (REM) for railway to compensate the time-varying Doppler spread. The dedicated REM for high-speed...

Joint multipath-Doppler diversity in mobile wireless communications

We introduce a new approach for achieving diversity in spread-spectrum communications over fast-fading multipath channels. The RAKE receiver used in existing systems suffers from significant performance degradation due to the rapid channel variations encountered under fast fading. We show that the Doppler spread induced by temporal channel variations in fact provides another means for diversity...

The Effects of Doppler Spreads in OFDM(A) Mobile Radio Systems

We analyze the effects of Doppler spread in mobile channels on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) systems. This is important, since channel variations during one OFDM symbol cause Inter SubCarrier Interference (ICI) in OFDM systems, which degrades the performance, since IC1 can be seen as additional near-Gaussian noise. The analysis is outlined, and closed-form results given for num...

Joint Scale-lag Diversity in Mobile Wideband Communications

We consider the effect of mobility on a wideband direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) communication system, and study a scale-lag Rake receiver capable of leveraging the diversity that results from mobility. A wideband signal has a large bandwidthto-center frequency ratio, such that the typical narrowband Doppler spread assumptions do not apply to mobile channels. Instead, we assume a more ge...

RICE UNIVERSITY Time-Selective Signaling and Reception for Communication over Multipath Fading Channels

The mobile wireless channel o ers inherent diversity by virtue of multipath and Doppler shifts. Multipath diversity is exploited via spread-spectrum signaling employed in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. However, the RAKE receiver commonly used in CDMA systems exploits only multipath diversity, and consequently su ers from signi cant performance degradation under fast fading. We de...
